When many of us get out of bed in the morning, after going through our toiletry routines, the next thing that comes into our head is a nice fresh cup of. you guess right, coffee! The craze across the country now is about latte coffee, and the appeal cuts across both gender. So it is safe to conclude that we are in a new java epoch. Though when I was growing up the drip pot was the favorite of my parents, I promised myself I must get an espresso machine no matter what, and I can proudly say it is now resting on my kitchen counter.

This has made me to afford the luxury of being able to sit back and relaxed with an iced vanilla latte coffee any time I want it. You surprised about the vanilla bit? well it happens to be my favorite, and I guess we all have one when it comes to caffeinated beverage flavors. Can you let us in on your favorite latte coffee?

Are you a regular feature at the local drive thru coffee joint? And how frequent do you pass their line around daily, once, or twice? Regardless of your response it is obvious you are spending considerable money at this joint. Don't get me wrong, cos I am not saying you should quit drinking coffee or never derive pleasure from a fresh latte coffee again, far from it.

My point is you should consider the huge sums you spend on fancy coffee drinks, because most latte coffees cost about $3 or $5 a cup, and a single cup daily translates to about $20 per week, which is an average of $80 every month. I will let you figure out your annual bill for latte coffee by yourself. I bet you will be tempted to go marching down the coffee house demanding all your money back.

There is no point crying over spilled milk, rather you should start planning how to prepare your own latte coffee right inside your home. And what you need to make this a reality is an espresso machine, which fortunately is very available in different forms in the market.

When you get this done, it is then you can start fantasizing about the flavors for your latte coffee. It all depend on your preference, whether you like your coffee iced or steaming hot. Everyone likes their java prepared in different ways. It is the reason why the coffee beverage industry is experiencing a boom.

You can up the ante by going online and search for the coffee joints in your locality, or you can browse the net for espresso machines and high quality beans across the planet.

    Are Coffee Houses Fashionable?

    W hen you think of a coffee house, the first thing, which might come to mind, would be a cozy place serving gourmet coffees and espressos, couches to lounge on while you sip your coffee and maybe engage in a conversation with a friend or read a good book. Have you every thought about how coffee houses got there start?


    One of the first coffee houses, which publicly served coffee, was the Kiva Ham in Constantinople now known as Istanbul. To the Turks coffee was such an important part of their life a women could legally divorce her husband for not supplying her with enough coffee. Turkish coffee was made to be served strong, black and unfiltered. Coffee was usually made in an ibrik.


    In Europe it became fashionable to add sweetener and milk to coffee. This practice started in the first coffee shop opened in Europe around 1529. The Turkish army invaded Vienna leaving behind bags of coffee beans when they fled. Franz Georg Kolschitzky had apparently lived in Turkey and was the only person who knew what the beans were. He claimed the bags of coffee beans as the spoils of war and opened up a coffee house. He came up with the idea of filtering coffee along with the notion of adding sweetener and milk. The coffee was a hit in Vienna and after the serving sweet pastries and other treats the coffee house business soared.


    The establishment continued to spread, with the opening of the first one in England in 1652. Coffee popularity in England was growing when the idea arrived again only this time from Turkey. An English coffee house was the first to use the word ?tips? meaning gratuities. In the coffee house a jar was placed on the counter with the sign reading ?To ensure proper service?. A customer would place a coin in the jar to get fast service.


    The British had a nickname for their coffee houses. They called them ?penny universities? mainly because that was the price of the coffee and the social upper class of businessmen were found there. One small coffee house was run by Edward Lloyd attracted the business client?le. The idea spread through out Europe. Italy opened its first coffee house in 1654 and in Paris in 1672. Germany opened its first coffee house in 1673. The coffee houses came to America shortly after the Americas were colonized. The coffee houses in America were the hot spots for the business community just as they were in Europe. New York was the location of the first coffee house for the New York Stock Exchange. A lot of business took place at this location.


    For years regular coffee was all that was served in coffee houses, then along came espresso. Gaggia invented the commercial piston espresso machine in 1946. This machine was much easier and safer to use than the earlier models. These machines were first used in the Gaggia coffee bar in Italy. They offered espresso along with the regular coffee. The coffee houses of today were born.

    Gourmet Coffee Beans - a Brief Overview


    The coffee plant has two main species. There is the Coffea Arabica, which is the more traditional coffee and considered to be superior in flavor, and the Coffea Canephora known more commonly as Robusta. Robusta tends to be higher in caffeine and can be grown in climates and environments were Arabica would not be profitable. Robusta is also typically more bitter and acidic in flavor. Because of this Robusta tends to be less expensive. High quality Robusta is also used to blend espresso for more bite, and to lower costs.

    A little known fact is that some coffee beans improve their flavor with age. It is the green unroasted beans which are aged; the typical length of time is 3 years, though there are some houses which sell beans aged to 7 years. Aged beans have a fuller flavor and are less acidic.

    Growing conditions, soil types and weather patterns during the growing season all contribute to the flavor of the bean, creating the differences in flavor from points of origin, such as Kenya or Brazil. However, roasting adds its own flavor, sometimes to the point that it is difficult to tell where the beans originated from, even by experienced cuppers.

    The lighter the roast the more the natural flavor of the bean remains. This is why beans from regions such as Kenya or Java are normally roasted lightly, retaining their regional characteristics and dominate flavors. There is a method of roasting in Malaysia which adds butter during the roasting producing a variety called Ipoh White Coffee.

    Beans roasted to darker browns begin to taste more like the method of roasting than the original flavors. Dark roasts such as French or Vienna Roasts tend to completely eclipse the original flavor. Roasting to whatever degree, while adding stronger flavor does not effect the amount of caffeine of the bean.

    Fry pan roasting was popular in the 19th century, since the beans were normally shipped and purchased still in their green state. You simply poured the green coffee beans in a frying pan and roasted them in the kitchen. This process took a great deal of skill to do in a consistent manner. Fry pan roasting became much less popular when vacuum sealing pre-roasted coffee was perfected. However, in order to vacuum seal roasted beans, you had to wait for them to stop emitting CO2, as roasted beans do for several days after the roasting process. What this meant was that vacuum sealed coffee was always just a little stale as the flavors begin to turn bitter and deteriorate in just about a week after roasting.

    Home roasting is once again becoming popular with the creation of computerized drum roasters which help simplify the process. There are some people who have found methods of effectively roasting beans using their hot air pop corn makers.

    The region the bean is from as discussed before is a primary factor to the type of flavor you can expect from the brew, though it is very true that 'new' or unexpected tastes come from every region.

    Arabia and Africa grow their coffee beans in high altitudes in the rich black soils of Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and Tanzania. The flavors of these beans are distinct and of legendary status.

    The Americas coffees are grown in near rainforest conditions in areas such as Colombia, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Coffees of the Americas tend to be very well balanced and aromatic.

    The Pacifics includes coffees from Sumatra, Java, New Guinea and Sulawesi, which are as various in flavor as the islands they come from.

    Then there are the exotics such as certified Jamaica Blue Mountain and certified Hawaiian Kona. These are rare indeed and can go for as much as $60.00 per pound.
